Music Is in The Air at Trinity Catholic Academy
Trinity Catholic Academy is all about music this summer as the first two week session of Piano Camp and Drum Camp was held.

In Piano Camp students learn all about the piano and start to learn how to read piano music. Each day starts with note recognition, using music software games that allow students to progress at their own pace. They also learn to write music notes and symbols on staff and keyboard lapboards. Ear training games using hand bells add to the fun of learning about scales. Most of the time is spent with hands on the keyboard, playing on a variety of acoustic pianos that include keyboards with headphones.

Twice during the camp a guest performer would play piano music and answer questions. By the end of the course each student played a performance piece on a baby grand piano for the recital. Each student also received a certificate of achievement upon completion of the camp. When asked about their favorite part of the camp, the most common answer was simply "getting to play the piano."

In Drum Camp students learn about different types of percussion instruments and how to play them. This ensemble focuses on rhythms and grooves from around the world. West African poly-rhythms are the basis of the group. They also discover Latin grooves including Brazilian and Afro-Cuban beats. Students are introduced to basic snare drum-playing including note reading and technique. Each student was able to play on a drum set incorporating both feet as well as the hands in drum set performance. Call and Response games are the basis of both the hand drumming and drum set ear training portion of the course. All students learn about musicianship in the role of the drummer.
