A LESSON IN LIFE COMES TO TRINITY CATHOLIC ACADEMY

More than the sounds of children's voices were heard in the lower campus halls of Trinity Catholic Academy on Tuesday, February 26, 2008. The cacophony of "peeps" interspersed with strident squawks were hearkened far above the spirited voices of excited children. Trampling down the hallway of Trinity Catholic Academy was a miniature squadron of chicks, hip-hopping to the beat of an irregular drummer. The mother hen, a Rhode Island Red, feathers all puffed up, serious of demeanor, rushed hither and fro at the rear, striving mightily to keep her flock under control.

Ms. Helen Nocivelli, kindergarten para-professional, and Mr. Matthew Camara, owner of the brood, treated the children to a hands-on farm experience. Each grade level incorporated these live animals into an excellent academic learning activity. Pre-kindergarten read "Henny Penny" by Cass O'Keefe while Kindergarten read and discussed "Across The Stream", by Mirra Ginsburg. Several classes enhanced their artistic creativity by sketching the hen and her chicks in free form. Grade 2 and Grade 3 seized the opportunity to create a Science lesson on nature, nurturing and life. The first grade initiated a Religion teachable moment on caring of the mother hen and her brood preparatory to Springtime and Easter. Our "peeps" educational event incorporated Reading, Science, Art and Religion- a true example of teaching across the curriculum. The students were actively and enthusiastically engaged. They learned and quickly absorbed the Christian concept of the sacredness of life.

Every class at Trinity Catholic Academy immensely enjoyed this enrichment experience bringing Science, Literature, Religion and Art alive for our young students. Most of the children never had the serendipity of caressing a chick and catching a glimpse, however brief, of the beauty of creation. Hopefully, they will carry with them this Catholic message of hope, joy and renewal in Christ as they continue their journey in life.

Respectfully submitted,
Pauline A. Labouliere, Principal
